Audio
"I can't hear the audio clearly"
Try turning up the volume on your audio player. To do this, find the 'Loudspeaker' icon on your Windows task bar at the bottom of the screen. Single click on this, and adjust the volume.
If you can't see the Windows task bar, click here.
Buttons and tabs
"I get confused by the functions of the different buttons and tabs"
We suggest that you take the 'Tour' again from the home screen. The function of the various buttons and tabs is explained there.
If you still find them confusing, write to lccommons@ust.hk and let us know exactly where you are in the program and what you're confused about (sending a screen shot is particularly helpful - on most computers, you can do this by pressing 'Alt' and the 'F10' key to capture the screen image, and then pasting this into a Word document): lcweb@ust.hk.
Copy and paste
"I've written some notes on screen as part of a TOE task. How do I save them?"
The normal Word copy function ('Ctrl C') does not work in this program. Instead, after you have finished writing as part of one of the TOE tasks, highlight what you want to copy and then click on the 'Copy' icon that you will see next to what you have written. Then open up Wordpad or Word, and paste into that as normal.
Navigation
"How do I move from one part of the program to another?"
This should be clear from the Tour. If you are not sure, we recommend that you take the Tour again - click on 'Tour' on the home screen.
The two main ways of moving around the program are to click on 'Map' or 'Home'.
Recording progress
"How can I keep a record of what I have done?"
On launching the TOE program, you will be instructed to insert a floppy disk into your A: (floppy disk) drive and click 'CHECK' if you want to keep a record of which parts of the program you have visited. When you quit the program, a file named 'TOE Score.txt' will be saved to your floppy. When you use the program again, insert your floppy disk into the floppy disk drive again, and you will then be able to see which parts of the program you have already visited or completed by clicking on 'Map'.
Returning from the TOE website
"How do I get back to the program from the TOE website?"
Click on 'Thru Other Eyes' or 'TOE' on the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen.
If this is not visible, hold down the 'Ctrl' key and press 'Esc'. This will reveal the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen.
Screen size
"The 'Through Other Eyes' screen on my computer is too small/too large."
To change the settings for your monitor, go to 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control panel', and 'Display'. Then click on the 'Settings' tab. You can then alter the pixels setting for your monitor. A higher resolution will produce a smaller 'Through Other Eyes' screen, and vice versa.
Note: although reducing the settings from 1024x768 to 800x600 will produce a larger 'Through Other Eyes' screen, it may also hide the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen. For this reason, most users will find that a resolution of 1024x768 makes it easier to move in and out of the program.
Voice recording
"How do I start recording?"
Click on the green button. This will now change to red, and the word 'Recording' will appear. Start speaking now.
"How do I stop the recording?"
Click on the red button.
"How do I play back my recording?"
Click on the 'Play' button next to the green button.
"I can't hear the recording at all"
Make sure your computer has enabled an audio-recording device (either the computer's in-built microphone or an external microphone). Double-click the 'Loudspeaker' icon on the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen, and select 'Properties' under the 'Options' menu. Select 'Recording' and click 'OK'. On the 'Recording control' panel', check the 'Select' box under 'Microphone' and adjust the voice recording level.
If you can't see the Windows task bar, click here.
If you can't see the 'Loudspeaker' icon, go to 'Start' on the Windows task bar, and select 'Settings', 'Control panel' and 'Sounds and Multimedia'. Then click on the 'Audio' tab and on 'Volume' under 'Sound recording'. On the 'Recording control' panel', check the 'Select' box under 'Microphone' and adjust the voice recording level.
To find out how to adjust audio playback level, click here.
"The quality of the recording is very poor - I can hardly hear myself."
Try putting your mouth closer to the computer's in-built microphone when recording.
Alternatively, use an external microphone (e.g. one that comes as part of a headset). This will improve the quality of your recordings dramatically.
Windows task bar
"What is the Windows task bar?"
It's the series of icons or boxes that are normally visible at the bottom of your screen, and that enable you to move from one program or document to another.
"I can't see the Windows task bar"
If you want to access WordPad or another file or program that you have been using (e.g. your e-mail or web browser), hold down the 'Alt' key and press the 'Tab' key. This should enable you to access previously open documents or programs.
If this doesn't work, hold down the 'Ctrl' key and press 'Esc'. This will reveal the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen.
If you want the Windows task bar to be visible the whole time, you need to change the settings for your monitor. Go to 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control panel', and 'Display'. Then click on the 'Settings' tab. You can reduce the 'Through Other Eyes' screen size by changing the monitor setting from 800x600 pixels to 1024x768. This will allow you to see the Windows task bar and the 'Through Other Eyes' program at the same time.
WordPad
"How do I access WordPad when using TOE?"
Hold down the 'Alt' key and press the 'Tab' key. This will give you access to WordPad, along with any other documents or programs that you were using. Keep pressing 'Tab' until WordPad is highlighted and then release the 'Alt' key.
"How do I save what I have written on WordPad?"
From the menu in WordPad, choose 'Save as' from the 'File' menu, give the file a name, and choose where you want the notes to be saved. If you are using a computer that is not your own, you may want to save it to a floppy disk on the computer's A: drive. If you then want to add to this file next time you use TOE, simply start the TOE CD-ROM and once WordPad has opened, in WordPad choose 'Open' from the 'File' menu and select the file you previously saved.
