LANG1001H is a reading and writing course for first year Engineering and Science students who have a high level of proficiency in English. In this course you will develop your critical reading skills, and your essay writing skills. You will research topics related to the environment, and provide verbal reports and written outlines prior to writing an informative essay on your chosen topic. You will then discuss various arguments related to your topic, and present another verbal report before writing an argumentative essay. Finally, you compile your work into a portfolio. Throughout the course, you will be given many readings, through which you will learn aspects of organisation and language style which you can apply to your writing.
The course is graded and carries three credits. There are 42 contact teaching hours. Lessons are conducted for 3 hours per week, in two 1.5-hour lessons.
