Online activities
The online listening tasks and activities aim to give additional help to improve your listening skills. An integral part of the course, these activities are divided into five fortnightly units to parallel in-class learning and must be completed within the time-frames specified:

Discussion
In this task, you will form groups of 3 or 4 to carry out a group discussion on assigned topics. The discussion will last for 15 minutes for a group of 3 or 20 minutes for a group of 4. On the day of the assessment, your group will be given 3 topics, one from each of the three themes covered in the coursebook. You will have 2 minutes to prepare the topics and you should cover 2 of them in your discussion.
Please click here to see the collection of topics that will be used in this assessment. You are encouraged to prepare for the topics, but you must not try to memorize a script for the discussion. You are not expected to bring any notes to the discussion either.
You will be assessed on an individual basis using the following criteria:

Reading aloud
You will be asked to read aloud a piece of assigned text to your instructor to demonstrate your pronunciation skills in connected speech. The assigned texts can be found on pages 76-80 of your coursebook. You will have 2.5 minutes to prepare for the reading and your performance will be assessed with the following criteria:
| Sounds and words (vowel sounds, consonant endings, clusters and word stress) and general accuracy |
- Is the reading accurate?
- Are the sounds and words well-mastered?

| Pronunciation of assigned words/phrases

- Are the assigned words accurately pronounced?

| Connected speech (linking, weak forms, sentence stress) and general fluency

Final test
At the end of the semester, you will have a final test with two parts, the first being a listening test, and the second a vocabulary test. The test will show how much improvement you have made in your listening skills and vocabulary learning during this semester.
Participation
Participation is deemed as an essential component of your performance on the course. Your participation mark will be determined by your instructor based on your performance in the following aspects:
Attendance, punctuality, attitude, participation, preparation, use of book, use of English |
- Does the student attend all lessons?
- Is the student always punctual?
- Does the student have a positive attitude to classmates and instructor?
- Does the student take an active part in class activities?
- Does the student prepare well for class?
- Does the student use only English in the class?
- Does the student come to class with a course book?

Language 106 is a graded course. Your

Writing
You will have to submit a piece of
writing on an innovative gadget or technology which is designed to meet the needs of one of the following groups of people:
- patients with chronic diseases
- pet owners
- trailwalkers / marathon runners
- business executives
- public health practitioners
- artists - musicians, painters, designers
- children in the playground
- gourmets
You will
need to write two drafts; the first draft is due in
Week 6, the final in Week 9. Both drafts should be submitted
electronically to the Assignment Management System (AMS)
as well as in the form of a word-processed copy. Refer
to p. 16 for further details and to the LANG 106 course
website for instructions regarding submission. Your
writing will be assessed on content, organisation and
language.

Online activities (OCS)
In addition to face-to-face lessons,
the course also includes an online component with an
aim to provide additional practice to help you work
on grammatical accuracy and to become familiar with
online resources that you can use to help improve your
writing. These activities, starting on Wednesday (17
March 2011), are divided into three weekly units which
must be completed within given timeframes. Remember
to complete these activities before the deadline, and
do not wait until the last day. The server may crash
if too many students log on at the same time!

Presentation
In Weeks 12-14, you will have to give
a 5-minute individual presentation. You will be assessed
on content, organisation, language and delivery. See
p. 79 of the course book for details.
Vocabulary &
grammar
This semester you are required to learn 184 words from Levels 6 and 7 of the Academic Word List in My Words. You will also learn about
online tools and resources that will help you improve
the grammatical accuracy of your writing. At the end
of the semester, you will be assessed on the assigned
words and your ability to correct the common grammatical
errors students tend to make.
Participation
This includes punctuality, preparation
for class, participation in class, willingness to use
English in class, timely completion and submission of
homework and assignments (including the completion of
online activities).
