LANG 2049 is a required, one-year discipline-oriented course for second year Engineering students. It aims to introduce essential skills for communicating technical content to both specialised and lay audiences. Students will practice a range of language and communication skills, such as giving oral presentations and preparing proposals.
Content
LANG 2049 is a two-part course to be taken over two semesters.
Part I (Semester 1) of LANG 2049: will give students opportunities to prepare and deliver a research-based presentation integrating the following key areas:
- presentation skills;
- collaborative learning;
- research skills;
- critical reading and thinking skills;
- academic and linguistic knowledge related to the field of Engineering; and
- vocabulary learning.
It will also introduce students to the principles of technical writing. Students will prepare technical documents such as proposals, so as:
- to become confident, independent writers who can use tools and resources to write accurately and fluently; and
- to learn the principles of persuasive writing for specific audiences.
Part II (Semester 2) of LANG 2049: will offer students the following combinations of modules:
- "Persuasive Proposals" + "Job-Seeking Skills in English"
- "Job-Seeking Skills in English" +
"Effective Discussions"
- "Campus Beat" + "Job-Seeking Skills in English"
- "Persuasive Proposals" + "Effective Discussions"
The module of "Job-Seeking Skills in English" is offered ONLY in LANG 2049 (spring). In other words, students who intend to take this module should do so in Year 2.
