Objectives

To encourage and develop:

  • Your ability to critically read and discuss business issues and current affairs
  • Your ability to present and discuss a critical analysis of a relatively current business or current affairs issue
  • Further the speaking skills you gained in LANG 3069

By the end of this course, we expect you:

  • To be able to read quickly
  • To be able to evaluate an article
  • To be able to present and discuss issues professionally
  • To know more about, and have informed opinions of, current affairs and recent business issues featured in various news media
  • To be able to monitor your own speech and become aware of ways in which you can improve the intelligibility of your own spoken English

Content

The course consists of six main activities:

  1. Reading of articles about business (in preparation for the seminar)
  2. Notes on the articles based on a number of critical questions (in preparation for the seminar)
  3. Seminar discussion of the content and issues raised in these articles
  4. Leading a seminar discussion with two or three peers which involves finding the main article for the rest of the class to read as well as other articles for yourselves as seminar leaders
  5. A bi-weekly vocabulary record based on the seminar articles
  6. Individual and group presentations to further develop your presentation skills
