Course Description

LANG 3069 focuses on the processes and skills of effective communication in the workplace. It is a one-semester course offered twice a year both in fall and spring.

Business Writing Skills

  • write a range of business letters to accomplish business objectives including:
    • making enquiries and specific requests,
    • confirming details and negotiating changes to arrangements,
    • conveying positive and negative business messages,
    • establishing and maintaining goodwill with the reader.
  • identify and apply an appropriate organisational structure for the letters based on the nature of the message.
  • write a recommendation report to inform the reader's decisions with relevant information, reports of progress, analyses and suggestions.
  • use the Direct Approach to organise the reports.
  • format the letters and reports professionally and apply a specific punctuation convention consistently.

Business Speaking Skills

  • deliver an informative and a persuasive presentation to discuss a specific client' s problems and needs, analyse business opportunities, and suggest solutions and actions.
  • organise the presentations with an audience-centerd approach.
  • use appropriate turn taking strategies in the presentations.
  • enhance the effectiveness of the presentations with appropriate body language.
  • clarify, support and illustrate ideas with appropriate visual aids.

Use of Language

  • use clear language in an appropriate tone, style and level of formality in business writing and speaking.
Leadership and Teamwork
  • set self and team goals in the business simulation project, and collaborate with team members to achieve these goals.
