Introduction to Latin for Legal Professionals
(10 CPD Points for completion of the whole course)

Time: 29th April, 6th, 10th and 13th May, 6:00 – 8:45 p.m.
Venue: Hong Kong Central Library, Causeway Bay

Anyone trained in the English legal system will be aware of the abundance of Latin phrases in even the most elementary texts. Many people learn these without understanding the meanings of their constituent parts.

If you would like to know something of the structure of Latin phrases - and at the same time delve into the original meanings of common and less common Latin words (many of which have heirs in modern English) - then our Latin for Legal Professionals course will certainly be of interest to you.

In this ten-hour course, you will be introduced to the basic structures of Latin, and essential vocabulary for a variety of legal contexts, leading to reading extracts from a second-century legal handbook, Gaius' Institutiones. The course assumes you have absolutely no previous knowledge of any Latin grammar or vocabulary, and starts from first principles. But at the end, you will be able to tackle original sentences written by long-dead native speakers, and understand the structures and meanings of common legal phrases.

The course has been accredited by the Law Society of Hong Kong. A total of 10 CPD points will be awarded for completion of the whole course. CPD points will be granted in the following cases, based on a participant's attendance record:

  • Attendance at Sessions 1 and 2 (29th April and 6th May): 5 CPD points
  • Attendance at Sessions 1, 2 and 3 (29th April, 6th and 10th May): 7.5 CPD points
  • Attendance at Sessions 1, 2, 3 and 4 (29th April, 6th, 10th and 13th May): 10 CPD points
