(Two postgraduate students, Vivian from China
and Augustino from Jakarta, talk about living on campus.)
| A: |
Hi,
Vivian, how are you? |
V:
|
Hi, I'm fine.
What about you, Augustino? |
A:
|
Me too. I want
to get your opinion about something. |
| V: |
Yes, what is
it? |
A:
|
What do you
think of living on the campus of the Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology? I mean do you like to live
on campus? Is it good for your studies? |
V:
|
Yes, Augustino,
I enjoy living here because, you know, I can make more
friends here and discuss with them the problems in my
studies. And meanwhile, I learn how to live independently,
I mean, to live alone and away from my family. In fact,
I did live on campus when I studied at Shanghai Fudan
University. However, it was a bit different. At weekends
and during the long holidays, I usually went back home,
which was close to the university. The majority of university
students in China do live on campus. What about you,
Augustino? Have you ever lived on campus before? |
A:
|
No, this is
the first time I live on campus. I studied in Jakarta,
the capital city of Indonesia for my bachelor degree.
In my home country, most of the universities do not
provide accommodation on campus. So when I was studying
there, I was living in a kind of boarding room. It's
like renting a room in a house. So even though it is
located near the campus, it is not as convenient as
living on campus. |
V:
|
Yes, here it
is more convenient for us to use the library, the labs,
the sports center and all the other facilities. They
are all very close to us. And I see people around me
doing the same things as me, like studying in the library
and working in the labs. This makes me become more motivated
in doing my work. I mean, you know, the atmosphere here
is different from the outside. |
| A: |
Yes, absolutely,
especially this university has one of the best views
in Hong Kong. You can really enjoy the view while using
the outdoor facilities. But do you think living in the
central also has a lot of advantages, like being very
close to the shopping centers. You get many choices
of food. Because, you know, this university is located
in a remote area of Hong Kong. |
| V: |
But what about
the transportation? I mean you have to get up early
to attend classes in the morning and after a whole day's
work, you have to go back. That takes you at least some
time. |
A:
|
Oh, I see your
point, like if you work very late, you still need to
take a bus to go back home. It must be very inconvenient.
But how about the food here? I mean after working so
hard and you want to have a good dinner, then you can
have a good meal in central on your way back home. |
V:
|
Well, I think
the food in UST is quite acceptable and if you are really
bored with the food here, you can learn how to cook
by yourself. |
| A: |
Oh, yeah, it's
a good idea. Do you often do your own cooking? |
| V: |
Yes, I can cook
some Shanghainese food. |
| A: |
Me too. I can
cook some simple Indonesian food. Hey, how about cooking
our own food and having dinner together? |
| V: |
That's great.
We can do it on weekends. |
| A: |
Let's do it
this weekend then. |
| V: |
Ok. Bye. |
A:
|
Ok. |
