| You were talking
about, you were talking about your, uh, skinhead, your
most frightening [Right] experience. Did,did I ever
tell you the one about, um, dove hunting with my friend?
[No] You know, it was, um, back in Kansas. [M, hm.]
And um. Just right at the end of, right at, right at
the end of summer. Um, and we lived out, we lived out
in the country, um. He lived on a farm and I lived out
on a farm and [M, hm] We're over at his farm. Um, and
there's a pond. Most farms, they have a pond. And that's
usually the best place, poh! you know, for shooting
the doves. [Yeah] Cuz there's the doves are flying,
they come in for water. [Yeah] And, you know, 'cause
it's at, at, it's at the end of the, you know, summer.
So pretty much any time there's water, it's a safe place
so we're sitting up on the dam, you know [M, hm] like,
just a beautiful peaceful summer evening, you know,
as the suns' coming down. [M, hm] We're sitting up on
the dam, you know, just talking, you know, and occasionally
there's a dove comes in, you know, boom! You know, you
shoot it, you know [You take them in the air, not on
the water.] with a shotgun. Um, that'd be [sitting]
very, that'd be very, that'd be unsporting. [sitting
doves, right, yeah] No, you, you can never, you, no,
you can't shoot a dove on the ground. Um, on a telephone
wire, maybe. Mm heh-heh. Not, not on the ground, alright?
But no, you know, we were taking, we were taking these
in the air. [Mm] Um, you know, and if, uh, have you
ever shot a shot gun? [I've shot a, like a 2-2, I think,
but not a shotgun.] You know, 'cause most of the, you
know, shotguns we used were always, where you've got
like five shells and every time you shoot, you, you
know, you pump the stock. [Alright] And it kicks out
the old shells. [Then you, do you have to open it?]
No, no, no, no. You just pump it, you know. The old
shell comes out and the new shell comes in. [O-OK] So
you just go choo-choo and it changes the shells and
then, you know, when you pull the trigger. But, you
know, I was sitting about where you are and he was sitting
here. And we'd just, you know, had a shot on a couple
of doves. And he brought his gun down. And, and he did,
you know, and I mean I've thought about this so many
times since this happened about how stupid it was. And,
you know, the first thing you're taught, you know, growing
up, you know, if you live out on a farm or anywhere
where you go hunting is that, you know, you just, no
matter what the situation is, you never point the gun
at someone. [Mm.] Anyway, he's got the gun. We'd just
taken a shot. He brings his gun down and he's holding
it like this. Now, I'm sitting right here and he's sitting
a little behind me. So the barrel of the gun is like
right here. [Shoot.] And he goes Pshh! Boom! [Heh-heh
heh] And the gun went off. [Are you joking?] I mean,
right across [What?] the front of my stomach. [Phew.
Frickin' hell!] And I just sat there. You know, we both
of us, I think we just stood there for about ten minutes,
kind of. [Haaaw.] You know, breathing hard, thinking
about that. [Kha!] You know, 'cause I've thought about
that really so many times since then. 'Cause it was
just so close. [Yeah.] And if that would have over just
a little bit, there, there's no way you're going to
survive [Right.] You know, I mean, you're talking a
shotgun with a barrel that big. That's a lot [So these
would have] That's a lot of lead in the side [Right.
It would have killed you for sure. It wouldn't have
just spread you like with pellets] Oh, I mean, you know.
No, no, c'mon. We're this far away. [Right, right.]
It would have blown a hole right through me and. [Phew.]
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, um. [What was he doing with that
thing, like pointed at you?] Well, he just, what, you
know, it, it was just one of those situation where you
weren't thinking. And normally, when you change the
shell, nothing should happen. But. You know, for, for
whatever reason, something went wrong, you know. And
it just blew. It just blew the shell off and, uh. [Wow]
I'm still here. It's okay. [Phew.] Ha, ha, ha. But,
you know, you, you definitely think about that most
of the time about how [So how close? Was it just, like,
a few inches?] Yep, it was probably about that far.
(whistles) You know. That's no way to go. [Phoo phoo.]
You know. That was about, let's see, that was about
22 years ago. So I've had a few good years since then,
you know. [Heh heh] I'm still around.
