So
Keven I was thinking about the you know the
time when I was my most frightening experience
and I think it was when I was I don't know I
was about like 21, 22 and I'd been to this disco
in town this was in England and coming back
at about 2 in the meaning and I'd got about
a 30 minute walk back home, it was quite close
to the center of town |
| K: |
summertime?
|
| R: |
Yep |
| K: |
So it
was raining? It's an England story, it's gotta
be raining |
| R: |
It wasn't
raining - it was the day when it didn't rain!
So walking back and I'd got about fairly close
to where I lived so got out of town to the area
where I lived and I felt pretty safe there |
| K: |
yeah |
| R: |
you know
normally in England you don't worry much about
violence, it's not a problem so I was walking
along and I heard these footsteps behind me
and I look round there were four skinheads,
right, with their heads shaved, about 16, 15-16 |
| K: |
yeah,
yeah |
| R: |
not that
old but I was already a little bit kind of nervous
of skinheads anyway and I could hear them talking
and I keep on walking and I can hear the footsteps
getting a little bit closer so I don’t
break into a run but I just walk a little bit
faster, trying to act cool but in fact my heart
is going 'Boom boom boom!' |
| K: |
They've
got the boots on so you can hear every step? |
| R: |
They've
got boots on, short trousers up to here with
the boots on, short trousers up to here with
the braces holding up their trousers |
| K: |
yeah,
yeah, yeah |
| R: |
and shaven
heads, so I'm walking faster, I can hear the
footsteps getting closer and they pick up their
pace as well |
| K: |
yeah |
| R: |
'Oh my
God!' and then I can hear them say "Right
let's get the ...!", you know "Let’s
get him!" I thought "Oh my God!"
So I just, OK, forget about walking, run! |
| K: |
Run away! |
| R: |
and I
just ran as fast as I could. I took a I took
a turn off the street and they didn't follow
me, I thought "Oh, good, I've got rid of
them" like going round a square, right,
so take up a street and then a left and of course
what they’d done they'd gone left and
then right so they met me. |
| K: |
They
might have been skinheads but they weren't stupid |
| R: |
yeah
they weren't stupid so they met me just at the
kind of intersection |
| K: |
yeah |
| R: |
and of
course I was racing flat out I mean I was terrified
because this was they were just coming home
from they'd been into town, 2 in the morning,
and I guess they |
| K: |
They'd
been at the pub, probably |
| R: |
they'd
been drinking and they hadn't had any fun that
night and I was gonna be their fun but I wasn't
gonna hang around to wait to see what they did
to me. |
| K: |
yeah |
| R: |
Anyway,
so I just got to the intersection before they
did and I had about another 100 yards to race
and I got into my house and I just got in, I
think I was about like 10 yards ahead of them
I mean I was about only two or three seconds,
|
| K: |
You had
the key ready and the hand shaking? |
| R: |
Yeah,
yeah I was sort of shaking, quickly get in to
the door open and slam! And they never did anything
after that, right, they didn't attack the house |
| K: |
yeah |
| R: |
they
didn't throw bricks or anything. To them maybe
it was a joke but my heart was going so fast
because I think "Well if they get me, who
knows?" you know and I can't fight |
| K: |
yeah |
| R: |
right,
and I thought "They may kill me, who knows?"
I was absolutely terrified. |
