Mission
Mission Statement

The SAC is a facility that fosters the development of learner autonomy and lifelong language-learning skills among the HKUST community. Our purpose is to provide resources, opportunities and support to help learners take control of their own learning.

The objectives of the SAC are:
  • To provide a supportive environment for autonomous language learning
by making available and easily accessible a large variety of learning materials, media and activities, and providing orientation and advice on what is available, where to find it, and how it can be used.

  • To help learners develop the ability to control their own learning
by raising their awareness of the possibilities for language learning both inside and beyond the SAC; by helping them to identify their specific needs, set goals, choose appropriate learning materials and strategies, and evaluate their progress; by incorporating self-directed learning into Language Center courses; and by advising colleagues on how to support the development of learner autonomy in our students.

  • To continually evaluate and develop the service we provide
by conducting investigative and evaluative research within the field of self-directed learning and learner autonomy so as to ensure a dynamic and effective provision of learning environment and advice; and by soliciting user feedback through a variety of channels.

The SAC also seeks, wherever possible, to promote the development of learner autonomy to the wider community.
