English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) Awards Presentation and Closing Ceremony

The English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) Award Presentation and Closing Ceremony was held on Thursday, 5 May 2011 during which ELBS participants shared their experiences on the 12-week English program, the activities they enjoyed, the friendships they have established and the very meaning of this program to them. 43 participants received awards for their dedication to and successful completion of this program.

Dinner Across Cultures

The ELBS organized their third Dinner Across Cultures on the evening of 5 May 2011. Students and guests gathered at AJ’s in Sai Kung where they practiced English while enjoying authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, making friends and learning about different cultures and traditions over a uniquely exotic meal! We would like to offer a special thanks to Mrs. Fawsia Braine for teaching our students about Sri Lankan food and culture.

 

 

 

 

Dinner Across Cultures

The ELBS Management Team is proud to announce its feature event:
"Dinner Across Cultures" on Thursday, 28 April 2011. ELBS Participants, you are cordially invited to join this spectacular event, where you can have the chance to sample the exotic flavors of Sri Lanka, use your newly acquired dining etiquette skills and practice using English in a social setting. This is sure to be a blast, but space is limited! Please register by sending your student ID #, name, and ITSC email to lcelbs@ust.hk, and submit a $150 deposit to the Language Center's MainOffice (Room 3396, Lifts 17-18) on or before Wednesday, 27 April 2011. Intercultural Communication Workshop

ELBS hosted a workshop on the intricacies of Intercultural Communication on Thursday, 14 April 2011. Students engaged in an interactive role-play, and received valuable insights into the habits and behaviors that can cause problems between cultures. The Workshop also addressed differences in cultural values and possible ways to overcome miscommunication between friends and colleagues. Participants can now use their newly acquired knowledge and perspectives to start overcoming cultural barriers, attempt to make friends from different backgrounds, and enhance existing personal and professional relationships.

Intercultural Workshop

ELBS will be hosting a workshop on the intricacies of Intercultural Communication on Thursday, 14 April 2011 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in Room 4334. This workshop will address the differences in cultural values and how they can lead to miscommunication among friends and colleagues. There will also be a role-playing scenario, giving Participants opportunities to assume the roles of different cultures; attempt negotiationS; discuss where and how breakdowns in communication can occur, and ways we can re-connect when that happens.

Wine & Dine: Food Talk

The English Language Buddy Scheme hosted the workshop 'Wine & Dine: Food Talk' on Thursday, 7 April 2011, from 6:00 to 8:30pm. Participants and Buddies had a fantastic time learning the different manners, traditions, and place settings. Fun was certainly had by all.

 

Walk & Talk with Prof. Skorinko

The Mini-immersion Programme Management Team together with Prof. Skorinko held the workshop, ‘Walk & Talk with Prof. Skorinko. The students and staff shared a four hour exchange of conversations. Better still; the weather on that day was on our side. Walking and talking couldn’t have been easier. With the temperature soaring that day both the topics and the weather heated up.

Mini-Immersion Program (MIP) sponsored by the Language Center was excited to have a guest speaker from the United States, Prof. Jeanine Skorinko from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts USA. She shared with us about what it is like to study, conduct research, and socialize in America. The students attended were mainly research post graduates; this seminar was interesting and insightful, look forward in seeing Prof. Skorinko in the second part of the event this Saturday, 9 April ‘Walk & Talk’ with Prof. Skorinko.

Wine & Dine: Food Talk

The English Language Buddy Scheme will be hosting the workshop 'Wine & Dine: Food Talk' on Thursday, 7 April 2011, from 6:00 to 8:30pm in Room 2405 near Lifts 17-18. The workshop will introduce different types of food, from tapas to schnitzels, and we’ll discuss where to dine from cost saving to outrageously priced places, whatever takes your fancy.

Socializing in Workplace

Thursday, 17 March 2011 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Language Activity Officer Martin Lai taught ELBS participants about the many ways and situations in which they may find themselves interacting with colleagues in a new work environment. They learned to politely and assertively introduce themselves, to properly invite important clients out to the pub and even how to interact with important visitors over dinner. It's safe to say participants of this event are well prepared for 'Socializing in the Workplace'.

 

 

Socializing in Workplace

There are many ways and many situations where you need to socialize in the workplace. You can introduce yourself to your colleagues, take them out to the pub or even meet them over dinner in your first meeting with a new client or supplier. This activity will give you an opportunity to learn how to communicate effectively in a range of social, academic and professional contexts. Please join us on Thursday, 17 March 2011 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in Room 3007 to take part in this fun, informative event.


ELBS 2011 Photo Challenge

On the evening of Thursday 10, March 2011 the English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) organized a Photo Scavenger Hunt around the HKUST campus. The competition provided students with an excellent opportunity to exercise their creativity and practice their team building skills. Students were divided into separate teams that had to quickly solve riddles, perform tasks and take snapshots in the shortest possible time. Over 20 students participated and all of them enjoyed the competition! Students will be given an opportunity to vote for their favorite photos, and winners will be announced on Friday, 18 March 2011.

ELBS Photo Challenge

The English Language Buddy Scheme will be holding its second activity of the semester on Thursday, 10 March 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00pm in LTE. Students will be participating in a Photo Challenge that will take them all around the HKUST campus. The competition will provide students with an excellent opportunity to exercise their creativity and practice their team building skills. Students will be divided into small teams that will attempt to quickly solve riddles, perform tasks and take snapshots in the shortest possible time. Three prizes will be awarded to the best photos at a later date.

 

ELBS Spring 2011 Orientation and Opening Ceremony

The LEAP Task Force is proud to announce the success of the ELBS Spring 2011 Orientation and Opening Ceremony. The all-night event was fun and exciting, with participants being introduced to our 2011 Buddies and the new and improved ELBS program. Participants took part in a variety of games such as ‘basketball in the dark’, ‘ghost stories’ and ‘cocktails’. The buddies are in the process of planning and organizing interesting activities for the semester. Together, students will practice English, become more confident, further their team-building skills, and make new friends.

2011 LEAP Conference Series- Communication & Cultural Values

The Language Center is pleased to announce the completion of the first of a series of student conferences on communication and cultural values: ‘Connecting the Dots’. Nearly 90 participants from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the United States had an opportunity to listen to international speakers and student presenters, and to participate in activities designed to promote interaction and discussion on the topics of personal university experiences, career and life planning, goal setting, and work-life balance. The LEAP Task Force would also like to extend a special thanks to the University’s Associate Provost (Teaching and Learning) Dr. David Mole, the Language Center’s Director Dr. Arthur McNeill, and the Associate Director Dr. Keith Tong, for participating in this event.

2011 LEAP Conference Series- Communication & Cultural Values

The Language Center is pleased to announce the first of a series of student conferences on communication and cultural values: “Connecting the Dots.”
The Conference aims to promote interaction and discussion among students from different cultural backgrounds who are interested in university, career and life planning, goal setting, and work-life balance. It also allows students who may want to present academic papers for future conferences to gain authentic experience and solid practice in delivering formal presentations in front of a wide audience of diverse backgrounds. Wine and Dine: Business Etiquette

•Are you sometimes uncertain about types of wines, their origin, taste and ways to describe them?
•Have you been to a Western business dinner and were uncertain about the correct table manners?
•Do you know the formal way of using cutlery?
In this workshop, you will acquire the knowledge of how to overcome these uncertainties and learn about business etiquette, cultural conventions and refined manners that will give you the competitive edge over others. The Mini-immersion Programme Management Team will be hosting the workshop on Tuesday, 25 January 2011, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in Room 2306 near lifts 14-15. Decision Making Skills: Think out of The Box

The Mini-immersion Programme Management Team is holding a workshop ‘Decision Making Skills: Think out of The Box’ on Monday, 24 January 2011 from 09:30 am - 12:30 pm in Lecture Theater F. This Workshop will teach you how to challenge your own thought processes, as well as those of your fellow students, learn how to manage creative thinking skills and generate an abundance of possibilities. Fall 2010 English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) Award Presentation and Closing Ceremony

The English Language Buddy Scheme wrapped up the semester on Thursday, 25 November 2010 at the Awards Presentation and Closing Ceremony. Participants and Buddies together shared their new experiences, present hopes, future challenges, and new friendships in short presentations. The ceremony concluded with each successful participant receiving a Certificate of Attendance for their dedication and commitment to the program. We would also like to give a special thanks to our Language Center Associate Directors, Dr. Keith Tong and Dr. Martha Lam for participating in this event.

 

Dinner Across Cultures

On 18 November 2010, ELBS in conjunction with iVillage and Wall to Wall Living Learning Communities organized their second Dinner Across Cultures. Students and guests from all three programs gathered at Himalaya Restaurant in Wanchai, where they practiced English while enjoying authentic Indian and Nepalese cuisine. Making friends while sipping a cool glass of mango lassie and enjoying a spicy meal made the evening sweet, hot and content.

 

There are presentations and there are presentation skills

The Mini-immersion Programme Management Team hosted the workshop, "there are presentations and there are presentation skills" on Saturday, 20 November 2010. Angela Cheung, an international Producer/Director for Walt Disney, Fremantle Asia (makers of American Idol) and MTV and a trainer of many artists, talents and hosts, for example local artists William Chan, AngelaBaby and Liza S, conducted a full-day workshop sharing invaluable strategies with our students on how to present themselves in front of a camera and use alternative techniques to deliver their presentation with confidence. Participants gained very helpful and useful feedback on areas such as body language, content and timing. Here are a few of many things the students wrote about the workshop:

ELBS The Art of Writing Restaurant Reviews

The English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) is holding a workshop entitled "The Art of Writing Restaurant Reviews" on Tuesday, 16 November 2010 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in Room 3315. This workshop will introduce the fundamental techniques of writing a proper restaurant review, including its features, useful vocabulary and writing style. Participants will submit their own restaurant review to Hong Kong’s most popular restaurant review website Openrice.com.


There are presentations and there are presentation skills

The LEAP Task Force has invited Angela Cheung, an international television producer and director to come in and help our students acquire public speaking and presentation skills on 20 November 2010 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at LTE. More and more companies are using video as a key communication tool – to save money and their carbon footprint. Many meetings are now held via conference call. The chances are very high that students will be asked to present on-camera in their future job whatever that might be – from an engineer being asked to create a video tutorial, to a financial analyst giving stock trading advice in a real-time web broadcast to a conference call with your boss via FaceTime. ELBS Dinner Across Cultures

The English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) and Hall VII’s Wall-to-Wall and iVillage Living Learning Communities are co-organizing a “Dinner Across Cultures” night on Thursday, 18 November 2010 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the Indian and Nepalese restaurant, Himalaya in Wan Chai. ELBS members will have an opportunity to try out the authentic Nepalese and Indian dishes while learning about their cultures and making new friends with exchange and international students from Hall VII. It will definitely be an exciting night for students. To register, ELBS members please send an email indicating the full name, Student ID number and contact number to lcelbs@ust.hk.

 

ELBS The Art of Wine Tasting

The English Language Buddy Scheme hosted the workshop, ‘The Art of Wine Tasting’ on Thursday, 14 October 2010. The workshop introduced students to the art of wine sampling, including the different types of wines, their basic composition, and countries of origin. We would like to extend a special thanks to Professor Gregory James for his superb presentation on the proprieties of wine consumption. Everyone had a fantastic time and improved their vocabulary and social skills.

 

ELBS Introduction to Cocktails Workshop

The English Language Buddy Scheme hosted the workshop, 'Introduction to Cocktails', on Wednesday, 6 October 2010. The workshop introduced students to the finer points of cocktail making, including the different types of cocktails, their basic ingredients, and origins. Students even invented their own drinks! We would like to offer special thanks to our guest speaker, Mr. Francis Tam, for his expert instruction in the art of cocktail making. He has truly inspired our creativity and opened our eyes to the art of cocktails.

 

Afternoon Soiree

Together with the LANG 5000 course coordinators, the Task Force organized an Afternoon Soiree to help engage student interests in English language learning outside the classroom. Approximately 51 students signed up to advance their interview skills by conducting brief, personal interviews with international guests from countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, and several others. We would like to extend a special thanks to all our guests for their support, without whom this event would not have been possible. Students can’t wait to do it again!

Afternoon Soiree

Together with the LANG 5000 course coordinators, the Task Force is organizing an event, entitled Afternoon Soiree, to help engage student interests in the English language outside the classroom. The event will be held on Saturday, 9 October 2010 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Students will advance their interview skills by conducting brief, personal interviews with international guests from countries such as the Great Britain, United States, and more. Space is limited, so don’t miss out! LANG 5000 students interested in attending this event should sign up with their instructors.



Extreme Sports and Team Building Camp

The LEAP Task Force is proud to announce the return of the Extreme Sports and Team Building Camp. Project X Team, a group of confidence building, extreme sports enthusiasts, has generously agreed to return to campus for a repeat of this exciting and challenging camp. This camp will include climbing, team sports, races and other exciting activities designed to help students learn to effectively communicate with one another. This on-campus event will be held on Saturday, 23 October 2010 from 9:00am until 5:00pm. For more information or to request an application, please e-mail lcmip@ust.hk. Open Day

The LEAP Task Force was proud to participate in the Fall 2010 Open Day event held on Saturday, 18 September 2010. Together with secondary students, Language Center Activity Officers used their kitchen vocabulary to mix, microwave, and eat chocolate cake. Six sessions with more than 90 secondary students, all of whom were more than a little excited about getting to cook while they practiced their English. A great time was had by all.


 

 

     

 

Introduction to Cocktails Workshop

The English Language Buddy Scheme will be hosting a workshop 'Introduction to Cocktails' on Wednesday, 6 October 2010, from 6:30 to 8:00pm in Room 3588 near Lifts 27-28. The workshop, instructed by guest speaker Mr. Francis Tam, will introduce students to the finer points of cocktail making, including the different types of cocktails, their basic ingredients, and origins. Students will also be given an opportunity to invent their own drinks in a brief competition at the end of the seminar. The English Language Buddy Scheme will be holding it's first official activity of the season on Wednesday, 15 September 2010, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Students will be participating in a Photo Scavenger Hunt that will take them all around the HKUST campus. The competition will provide students with an excellent opportunity to exercise their creativity and practice their team building skills. Students will be divided into individual teams, that will attempt to quickly solve riddles, perform tasks and take snapshots in the shortest possible time. Three prizes will be awarded at the Fall 2010 English Language Buddy Scheme Award Presentation and Closing Ceremony. The awards will be: Most Creative Photo, Highest Overall Points and Best Overall Photo.

 

Andrew Matthews' "Happiness in Hard Times"

The Language Center is proud to present a talk and book signing session by international speaker and best selling author Andrew Matthews on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 from 6:45pm to 8:00pm in Lecture Theater J. Mr. Matthews is a popular corporate speaker with over one million people attending his seminars and speeches around the world. Along with introducing his new book "Happiness in Hard Times", he will be discussing such topics as handling disasters, enjoying work, goal setting, relationships, dealing with change, and just generally being happy. We hope to see you there!

2010 English Language Buddy Scheme (ELBS) Facilitator's Workshop

The 2010 ELBS Fall program has officially begun with a specialized workshop for this year's Activity Facilitators. The 16 second- and third-year students will act as Buddies, organizing fun and engaging activities through which participants, students wishing to improve their spoken English, can practice. Under the guidance of Certified NLP Trainer, Accredited Mediator, Licensed Corporate Trainer, and Certified Hypnotherapist Alex Lam, the Facilitators learned about rapport, leadership, support, creativity, mentorship, and the significance of their roles as student leaders. We have a superb team of motivated students and are looking forward to their exciting and innovative activities to come.

CAMPUS WRAP

The LEAP Task Force is proud to announce the successful completion of the 2010 CAMPUS WRAP Programme. With 44 Participants, 15 Student Leaders and the participation of instructors Anna P.S. Yu, Benjamin Leung, Jerry Wong, Keven Kasten, Marshall Yin, and Nora Hussin, a fantastic time was had by all. Students participated in events such as a drama workshop, hosted by Instructor Morgan Gadd; Introduction to Beers, Wines and Cocktails, hosted by Instructor Mark Hopkins; Talking about Food and Drinks, hosted by Professor Gregory James; Creative Thinking, hosted by guest speaker Dr.Jimmy Wong; Alpha-Beta Scenario, led by Ivan Yung; and a variety of student-led activities. Participants were provided with ample opportunity to enhance their confidence and vocabulary as well as make new friends through interaction with their peers. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we look forward to the return of many of our Student Leaders and Participants for the Fall 2010 ELBS Programme.

Extreme Sports and Team Building Camp

The LEAP Task Force in conjunction with Project X Team, a group of confidence building, extreme sports enthusiasts, is proud to host HKUST's first ever Extreme Sports and Team Building Camp. This camp will include climbing, team sports, races and other exciting activities designed to help students learn to effectively communicate with one another. This on-campus event will be held on Saturday, 19 June 2010.
