- Who is eligible to participate in the contest?
Participants must meet the following criteria to qualify for the contest:
- Currently registered HKUST student including
- Undergraduate or post-graduate student
- Local or international exchange student
- What is the application procedure?
Participants must submit their application online here.
- How do applicants know the result of application?
Applicants will receive an auto reply email as acknowledgement that their application has been received.
- When will the preliminary contest be held?
The preliminary contests for the prepared speech and unprepared speech categories are usually held several days before the final contest.
- When will the final contest be held?
The final speech contest is usually held on a Saturday early in the semester every year.
- When and how will applicants receive notification about their participation in the preliminary contest?
Applicants will receive an email to notify them of the date, time and venue of the preliminary contest within three days after the application deadline. A list of contestants will also be posted on the LC website with the date, time, venue and order of appearance for the preliminary contest.
- When and how will contestants know the results of the preliminary contest?
Contestants will receive an email to notify them of the results within 24 hours after the preliminary contest is finished.
- How is the order of appearance of the final contest determined?
Final contestants will be invited to an information session where they will be debriefed on the dress code and program rundown. Lots will also be drawn to on the spot among the contestants to determine the order of appearance.
- What is the dress code for the contest?
Contestants may dress in smart casual for the preliminary contest. They are encouraged to dress formally for the final contest.
- What preparations should contestants make for the contest?
Contestants are encouraged to view the video recordings of the HKUST English Speech Contest of previous years to learn more about the speeches and the delivery style of winners. Video clips of winners in previous years are available on the LC website while videos of the entire final contest are available in the HKUST library.
- Can contestants use visual aids in their presentations?
Contestants may use any sets, props or Powerpoint slides which they consider relevant for their presentations.
- Can contestants read from a script?
Contestants may choose to present their speech in any manner they consider appropriate.
