The HKUST English Speech Contest began in 2006 in response to invitations from various public speech contests in Hong Kong and Mainland China. This annual event, usually held in September, attracts the attention of students from full-time to part-time programs. Because of the increasing number of students interested in participating in the contest, a preliminary round of contest began to be held in 2008 to select the final contestants.
