The TOE
Video
The Through Other Eyes Video
is a 32-minute video which presents a series of interviews
in English in a Hong Kong setting. It follows two final-year
university students, Kelvin Lam and Angela Wong, as they go
from campus interviews to company interview to the final group
discussion.
 The
Video and User's Guide are designed for Hong
Kong tertiary students. They can be used either individually
or in classes/workshops. Their aim is to stimulate you to
think and talk about how you present yourself in job interviews.
The Video is in narrative form, with
no bullet points or commentary to interrupt the story. As
a result, you will be involved in what happens to Kelvin and
Angela. You will also, we hope, begin to think how you act
or would act in interview situations, and to see yourself
through other eyes.
The Video does not provide model behaviour
to copy. Similarly, the User's Guide does not provide
model answers. We believe that there is no such thing as a
'correct' answer to an interview question. What is appropriate
in one situation and for one person may not be appropriate
in another situation and for another person. The User's
Guide does, however, provide commentary in cases where
it would be difficult for you to imagine what an appropriate
response might be.

The
TOE CD-ROM
Based on the Through Other Eyes Video,
the TOE CD-ROM is designed for Hong Kong tertiary students
who are applying for companies that hold interviews partly
or wholly in English. Its aim is to help interviewees:
- see themselves as others see
them - to see themselves through other eyes
- develop their ability to communicate effectively
in job interviews in English
The TOE CD-ROM has three types of interviews:
- campus interviews (one-to-one
interviewing)
- company interviews (panel interviews)
- group discussions (monitored
and facilitated by interviewers)
In addition to nearly 30 minutes of video
recordings of two interviewees, Kelvin and Angela, the TOE
CD-ROM also contains over 2 hours of simulated interviews
on audio, and over 50 minutes of authentic video interviews
with Human Resources Managers at major companies in Hong Kong.
You will hear a large number of interviewers with a variety
of international English accents. The CD-ROM covers
a wide range of companies, jobs and interview types and provides
extensive practice in both interview and language skills.
Using the TOE CD-ROM, students will
be able to:
- develop their interview and
English language skills
- observe and analyse the performance of
other interviewees
- take part in extended interview dialogues,
role-plays and games
- record and hear their own voice
- hear feedback on their own performance
and the performance of others
- evaluate their own performance and identify
areas that they'd like to practise further
- track their progress through the CD-ROM
- research real company information on the
web in preparation for interviews on the CD-ROM
- watch experienced company interviewers
advising Hong Kong interviewees
- access company information, job-seeking
resources, language support and a discussion forum on the
TOE website
- search a language thesaurus to take them
beyond simple phrases when talking about themselves
